Biomimetic Restorations

Biomimetic dentistry repairs damaged teeth by copying how a natural tooth is built. Instead of cutting a tooth down to fit a crown, we remove only the damaged part and rebuild the tooth in layers with materials bonded to it, so the repair handles biting forces more like the original tooth.

Why it matters

Every time a tooth is cut down, it loses strength for good. Keeping more of your natural tooth can mean a stronger tooth in the long run, and in some cases it avoids the need for a crown or root canal treatment.

When it's used

• Large or deep cavities
• Cracked or broken teeth
• Old fillings that are leaking, cracked or failing
• Teeth that would traditionally be crowned

Not every tooth can be repaired this way. We'll examine the tooth and explain what's possible.

How it works

1. We examine the tooth and show you the damage on screen using an intraoral camera.
2. We remove the decay and weakened tooth structure, keeping as much healthy tooth as possible.
3. We rebuild the tooth in layers with tooth-coloured materials bonded to it.

What patients ask us

How is this different from a normal filling? A traditional filling fills the hole, and large ones can leave the remaining tooth weaker. A biomimetic restoration is bonded in layers to support and seal the tooth, which helps prevent cracks and leaks later.

Will it look natural? Yes. The materials are tooth-coloured and matched to your tooth.

Does it take longer? Often a little longer than a standard filling, because the tooth is rebuilt in layers.
