Scaling & Polishing

A gentle professional clean that removes the plaque and tartar your toothbrush can't, for healthier gums.

Scaling & Polishing

Even careful brushing misses spots, and wherever plaque sits for long enough it hardens into tartar that a toothbrush can't remove. Scaling and polishing is the professional clean that removes the tartar, lifts stains and gives your gums a chance to recover.

Why it matters

Tartar along and under the gumline is the main cause of gum disease, a slow and painless condition that makes gums bleed, recede and eventually lets teeth loosen. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and regular professional cleaning prevents most of it.

Gums that bleed when you brush are the earliest warning sign. At that stage, cleaning alone can usually reverse the damage.

How it works

  1. Scaling removes tartar from your teeth, above and just below the gumline. You'll usually feel vibration and a water spray, and most patients find it easy.
  2. Polishing lifts surface stains from coffee, tea and food, and smooths the enamel so plaque has a harder time sticking.
  3. We show you where plaque builds up in your mouth and the simplest way to deal with it at home.

What patients ask us

Does scaling damage enamel? No. It removes only tartar and stains. Some people say their teeth feel loose afterwards, which is the feeling of tartar gone from the gaps it had been filling.

Will it hurt? Most patients feel only vibration. If your gums are inflamed or your teeth are sensitive, tell us and we'll go gently or numb specific areas.

How often do I need it? Every six months with your check-up, for most people. Heavy coffee drinkers and smokers often like to come more often for polishing.
