Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening that lifts everyday stains and brightens your teeth safely, supervised by a dentist.

Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening lifts years of coffee, tea and everyday stains to brighten your teeth by several shades. It uses whitening gels at strengths that are only available through a dentist, applied with your gums and the rest of your mouth protected.

Professional whitening or shop-bought kits?

Pharmacy strips and whitening products sold online either do very little or can harm your enamel and gums if overused. Professional whitening starts with a check of your teeth, because whitening over an untreated cavity can hurt, and the dentist controls the strength of the gel and how it's used.

Professional whitening can be done in the dental chair, or at home with custom-fitted trays and gel supplied by the dentist. Both work well. We'll talk you through what suits your teeth.

How whitening works

  1. Your teeth and gums are checked first. Scaling and polishing beforehand helps the whitening work on clean enamel.
  2. Your gums are protected and the whitening gel is applied to your teeth.
  3. For the first 48 hours, it helps to avoid strongly coloured food and drinks such as coffee, tea and curry, so the result lasts.

What patients ask us

Will it make my teeth sensitive? Some people feel sensitivity for a day or two afterwards. It usually settles quickly.

How white will my teeth get? Usually several shades brighter, depending on your natural tooth colour and the type of staining. Crowns and fillings don't whiten, so whitening is best planned before any new front-tooth restorations.

How long does it last? Usually one to three years, depending on how much coffee and tea you drink and whether you smoke. Occasional top-ups keep the result.
